Deb McKay – Adelaide Parklands Art Prize 2023 Finalist

Deb McKay, Grasslands, Black Midfire, White Raku and Buff Raku Clay on Wooden Plinth, 39cm H  x 55cm W x 30cm D

Congratulations to ceramicist Deb McKay for being selected as a Finalist in the Adelaide Parklands Art Prize 2023 with her piece entitled Grasslands.

Deb has described the inspiration for the piece:

“As I walk through the grasslands in the Adelaide parklands, I get to a point on the track that I find my mind starts to clear, my dog smiles and I am inspired to breathe deeper.

This spot is near an area designed to protect a native woody grassland. It is a place where the grass is not cleared, where butterflies, bees, crickets, grasshopper and other insects breed undisturbed. It is a quiet place. The grassy woodland area is one of many areas across our parklands that demonstrates the variety of land practices that are essential to maintain ecological diversity, and encourage community through inspiring each of us to breathe deeper.”

Since its inception in 2014, the Adelaide Parklands Art Prize has grown in stature as one of the three richest art prizes in South Australia.

The second round of judging to decide the winner will be held in mid-to-late March before the exhibition opens from 24 March at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
